Will UK Students Snub Facebook for Studyvox?
Press Release: 20th Febuary 2008.
A social networking site solely for UK students, Studyvox (http://studyvox.co.uk), is poised to challenge generic sites like Facebook and MySpace, which are accused by some of reaching information and member overload. Studyvox gives higher education students across the UK a dedicated web space to connect with friends and fellow students, identified by what or where they study, and the opportunity to create a virtual community of their own.
Endorsed by pop superstar Kylie Minogue, the site is for students at UK higher education colleges or universities – a population of around 1.6 million – and launches on February 20, 2008.
Kylie told Studyvox creators Kevin Martin and Sara Hildebrandt: "I love the site and I think it is a great site for students," and added: "It looks great!"
Studyvox encourages members to create their own profile page so that students can meet and talk to each other online, find partners for study, sport and socialising, and discover who knows who and who knows what. The site works as an information directory and can replace email or even college message boards as the way to communicate.
Students looking for help with a tricky essay or support when revising for exams can set up forums or study societies to share ideas with others on their course, or with anybody taking their subject across the entire Studyvox network
But it’s not all work and no play: members can promote events, post photos, upload their favourite music and videos, take part in blogs, polls and quizzes, and form social groups. Among the most popular groups at the moment are ‘I hate sushi’ and ‘ Hoddley Hoddley’, designed for the disorganised! The site also allows students to upload work, such as articles or music, so that trainee hacks and budding musicians can showcase their talents.
And to help students battling with a budget, a classified section on the site allows members to buy and sell unwanted items, advertise for work or find a flatmate or houseshare. This service, as with everything on Studyvox, is completely free.
Co-founder Sara Hildebrandt explains why she felt there was a need for the site: “Sites like Facebook have become victims of their own success: with millions of members they seem set on becoming all things to all men. What sets Studyvox apart is its dedication to one group of people: students - with every idea and piece of information on the site easy to access and highly relevant.”
Speaking of Kylie’s enthusiasm for Studyvox , Sara adds: “She has written in her blog on her official website: ‘For students out there, here is a hot and helpful new site where you can connect with others who are studying similar subjects... Check it out!’ Wow! For a new site we feel truly honoured."
